Selling knives on Amazon can be a minefield of red tape, regulations and restrictions. In this guide, we’ll take you through the specifics steps you need to follow to sell knives, or other bladed products, on amazon. Before you set up as a seller on Amazon it is worth checking whether your product is permitted to be listed on Amazon at all. On Amazon, items classified as weapons under UK legislation such as (but not limited to) the Firearms Act 1968 and the Criminal Justice Act 1988 are prohibited.
The result of this is that Amazon prohibits a significant proportion of bladed products from being listed, this not only includes knives designed as weapons but also tools such as Stanley knives or diving knives. However, certain knives are allowed to be sold such as kitchen knives or folding blades that are part of a multi-tool, subject to being shipped with a permitted age verification on delivery.
You can find a list containing permitted and prohibited knives from Amazon here. Be aware, listing prohibited items can result in you having your selling permissions removed, either temporarily or permanently.
Now that you know your products are allowed on Amazon it is time to set yourself up as a seller. This is a simple step by step process that Amazon will guide you through. When setting up your seller account you must provide all required documentation and information including personal identification and proof of address, business registration details, proof of business address, and ID for any shareholders over 25%.
You can apply to become a seller on Amazon here.
The next step is to ensure you adhere to the listing guidelines for your bladed product. This involves two main steps:
1. Add a knife flag to your product
2. List the product in the correct category
These requirements vary depending on what kind of bladed product you are trying to sell. You can find out which of these requirements your listing needs to adhere to here.
Flagging a bladed product will create an "over-18 knife" warning on your product listing page containing the following message: "The bladed product is not for sale to people under 18 years. A signature will be required on delivery. See details.” It is up to you as a seller to ensure that your listings are correctly flagged. Flagging your listings is a simple process that can be done either manually or through a flat file.
Next, you need to make sure that you list your products in the correct category. For certain bladed products, Amazon is strict over which categories your product is listed and may remove or suspend listings that do not adhere to this. You can find out which category to list your products under here.
One of the most important features of selling online is getting products shipped to customers. On Amazon, this can be fulfilled by the seller or fulfilled by Amazon (FBA). Due to the complexity of selling bladed products on Amazon we recommend FBA but will explain the process for both methods.
Yes. One of the main benefits of selling on Amazon is that Amazon can remove a lot of the hassle of selling products online. By having your product fulfilled by Amazon (FBA), Amazon will take care of storage, delivery to customers, customer service and returns handling. This is particularly useful for selling knives due to the additional protocols you have to follow when fulfilling orders.
On Amazon, any bladed product that has a knife flag on its listing needs to be shipped with a permitted age verification on delivery (AVD) service and correctly tracked. If your products are FBA then all of this is taken care of by Amazon itself.
Selling your products through FBA is a relatively simple process. When you sign up to sell on Amazon you are automatically registered for FBA. You simply need to tell Amazon which products you wish to sell through the fulfilled by Amazon programme. If you are setting up new products simply click "I want Amazon to deliver and provide customer service for my items if they sell" on the product offer details page under Delivery Method.
You can also convert an existing offer to FBA. Simply go to your Manage Inventory page, select the products you want to sell through FBA and select Change to Fulfilled by Amazon from the Actions drop-down menu.
Firstly, you have to ship your products to an Amazon warehouse using a professional carrier. UK Amazon has a special rate with UPS which is £3.60 per box up to 15kg but Sellers are welcome to use any other carrier. You also need to pay storage and fulfilment fees which vary depending on factors such as the size and weight of your packages. You can find out more about storage and fulfilment fees here.
Amazon will also allow you to fulfil orders yourself, many sellers prefer this especially if they have the storage and delivery infrastructure already set up. However, bladed products have additional requirements and protocols to follow compared to other products.
First, you have to ship your bladed products with an AVD service, as mentioned above. Current AVD services that Amazon allows to ship bladed products are UPS, Royal Mail, and Yodel. You will have to use one of these carriers to fulfil your orders.
Secondly, you need to provide proof to Amazon that your products will be shipped with an AVD carrier. This proof can either be: 1) a contract between you and your carrier stating that all orders will be delivered with an AVD service 2) a statement from your carrier stating that all age-restricted orders will have a tracking number, which shows that the product has been delivered with an AVD service.
Finally, you need to upload the tracking details for each product shipped to Seller Central.
More information on providing Amazon with the above information and uploading tracking details can be found here.
Seller knives on Amazon can be tricky due to extra protocols related to supplying sharp items.
Step 1: Make sure your items are eligible
Step 2: Set yourself up as a seller
Step 3: Adapt listing to meet the Amazon sharp objects guidelines
Step 4: Set up shipping that's fulfilled by Amazon OR
Step 5: Set up seller shipping
The above steps detail the requirements needed to sell knives and other bladed products on Amazon. In addition to these steps, it will be up to you as a seller to manage other factors such as writing copy for your listings, managing stock, increasing your product ranking and more within the Amazon marketplace. If you would like help with any of the steps listed above, or even the entire Amazon process, please get in touch and we can get you a plan in place.
